Web design trends of 2019
In 2019, web design is mainly about your website’s usability. Your website’s speed, mobile websites and eye-catching designs with, for example, an asymmetric layout all play an important role in this.
Mobile first
Nowadays, Google ranks mobile-friendly websites higher in the search results than mobile-unfriendly ones. This means the mobile design of your website also plays a big role in your website’s findability in search engines. With a website where you want to create a mobile-friendly design, you first design for mobile use, and only afterwards do you work out the design for a desktop version.
Speed
To make a good first impression on your website’s visitor, it’s important that your website loads in less than 3 seconds. When the website needs more time to load, visitors will leave your website sooner. Everyone naturally wants a website that loads fast, and this is therefore also an important point for your website’s usability. Everything has to be faster nowadays, and that includes your website loading.
Parallax scrolling
You can make your website more dynamic and innovative by using parallax scrolling. Parallax scrolling makes your website grab attention faster, and quickly makes a connection with your visitor. With this effect, the visitor gets more of an experience on your website, which in turn makes them more inclined to stick around on your website longer. The most important thing with parallax scrolling is that, combined with a large and striking image, it stays simple. Otherwise your website will quickly become too busy, causing your visitors to leave your website sooner again.

One page design
Speed and minimalism are important trends that come back in various ways. This is also reflected in one-page design. A one-page design, also known as pageless design, is a website that consists of just 1 page, instead of several separate pages. The downside of a single page is that SEO will work less well. A single page does load faster, especially on mobile too. Because of this, search engines can also index your website’s content faster, since a single page also means you have fewer slowing-down elements on your website. The advantage of a single page is also that it’s easier to maintain.
Asymmetric layout
Besides flat design, an asymmetric layout is also popular. Using colours, shapes, textures and dynamic images in your design can guide your visitor’s attention in a different way towards the most important parts of your website. This also works well together with the parallax scrolling effect.
Video backgrounds
Using video backgrounds was already a trend before, but in 2019 it’s becoming a trend again. Using video backgrounds can increase the number of conversions, even though it can make your website slower. Video backgrounds grab your visitor’s attention faster than using a regular image or text. Your website’s SEO can also improve through a video background, because watching your video keeps a visitor on your website longer, which has a positive effect on SEO. A video background also conveys a message or atmosphere faster, since images say more than words. When you choose to use a video background, you do need to remember that it’s not too long, has no sound, and is of high quality.
Micro-animations
You can use micro-animations to create a consistent and logical experience on your website. Micro-animations are handy for mouse-overs and/or clicking on buttons. With these, your website’s visitor more quickly gets a good idea of the function of, for example, a button on your website. An example of a micro-animation is a colour change on a button when you hover your mouse over it, or a hamburger menu unfolding when you’ve clicked the icon. Nowadays micro-animations are used almost everywhere, although you usually don’t even really notice it. When you don’t use this, your website quickly feels somewhat more static. Small movements on your website can also grab your visitor’s attention and can guide them towards important parts of your website, such as a contact button.
Bold colours
Bold colours can quickly grab your visitor’s attention. You can use colours to guide your visitor’s emotions and actions. By using the right colours, you can leave a strong first impression. You can also use colours again to make micro-animations extra eye-catching. This way you’re once again guiding the visitor. Using too many bold colours can cause your visitor to become distracted and start forgetting things, because there’s simply far too much to see. It’s therefore important to find the right balance in the use of bold colours.
Sticky elements
Sticky elements have been a trend before, but they’re also making a comeback in 2019. Sticky elements are being used more and more often, placed both above and below, as well as on the sides of a website. Sticky elements don’t distract the visitor and make sure the visitor can quickly and easily find the most important information on your website. Sticky elements aren’t just used as a navigation bar, but also for, for example, promotions and offers, social media links, a chatbot, or for a call-to-action button.
