5 practical tips for your newsletter.
Need practical tips for your newsletter? A newsletter is an ideal communication tool for working on a direct relationship with your target audience, for sharing information, keeping your target audience up to date on developments, offers and much more. It’s also a good tool for generating more traffic to your website. In this blog we discuss five practical tips for your newsletter.
Keep the newsletter short
How many news articles can you use in the newsletter? We recommend between four and six news items. Through A/B testing you can test what works best. Keep in mind that readers don’t read all the items all the way through. They essentially scan the content. So put the most important information at the top too.
Choose a fixed frequency
There’s no answer to the question of how often a newsletter should be sent. This depends on a number of factors. Think, for example, of the number of news items available and what you as a business want to tell the reader. The content in the newsletter does need to hold value though. When there isn’t enough content to put together a newsletter, it’s really not a problem to skip it once. It’s important to find a balance in how often you send a newsletter. In short, think about the frequency, content and relevance.

Grab attention right away
As the sender, use a recognisable name, choose a catchy subject line and write an appealing introduction. By grabbing attention immediately, the reader feels addressed right away and the chance is greater that the reader will read the newsletter. Did you know a subject line may on average consist of a maximum of 75 characters? This includes spaces. Every character you add on top of that gets automatically cut off… Below is a list of how many characters you can maximally use per email service for an ideal subject line.
Outlook: 73 characters
Gmail: 70 characters
Mailchimp: 60 characters
Mailblue: 50 characters
Use Call-To-Actions
By placing Call-To-Action buttons, you let people know you expect something from the reader. By placing a CTA, you make your intention clearer and ensure the reader more quickly moves towards a purchase or sign-up. Do you have a promotion in your newsletter and want to persuade the reader to buy on your website? Then you can place a call-to-action button next to the text with, for example, ‘buy now’.
Segment your audience and content
When you have multiple target audiences, you might want to reach them in different ways. By sending different newsletters, you can share news items more specifically that are appealing to the target audience. When the written content suits the reader, they’ll find the newsletter many times more appealing. You could, for example, split your audience into subscribers and non-subscribers, customers and prospects, and much more. You can segment the content based on the target audience’s interests. Think, for example, of a newsletter for everyone with general news, schools, athletes and so on.
