Where on social media do you find your target audience?

Did you know that nowadays 96% of Dutch people use social media? On average, we spend 1.5 hours a day on social media! You need to make use of that, because your target audience is on social media too. But on which platform exactly is your target audience? I’ll explain that to you in this blog.

TikTok

Number of users in the Netherlands over 14 years old: 700,000
Number of users worldwide: 800 million

TikTok originally existed under the name Musical.ly, but ever since the platform changed its name to TikTok, the app has really grown in popularity. Every day, millions of teenagers use this channel. Here they make short videos in countless categories. From funny short sketches and dances to tips for taking care of your plants. You’ll find all kinds of things here! TikTok is still a fairly new social media channel, which means there aren’t yet all that many ads appearing here. More and more businesses are gradually appearing on TikTok, so why not yours?

If you want to reach young people, TikTok is the channel for you. With “regular” advertised ads you probably won’t get very far here, because the channel doesn’t focus on that yet. When you tie your business in with TikTok trends, you can try to gain a bit of extra reach among young people with your business. But it’s important here to keep track of this properly, and also to scroll through the TikTok feed yourself to discover trends.

Twitter

Number of users in the Netherlands over 14 years old: 2.8 million
Number of users worldwide: 330 million

Twitter may no longer have the biggest number of users, but this channel is still used a huge amount every day. Because Twitter has real-time interaction, it’s still a popular channel. Twitter distinguishes itself from other channels because, during important events and happenings, it’s always the most up to date. Twitter is ideal to scroll through when something is happening in the world. Tweets are also easy to share, meaning messages spread quickly. Visuals aren’t important on this platform — it’s really about short, catchy texts.

The points above are the reason that mainly people from politics, journalism and media are present here. If your business wants to be right in the middle of the news, make sure you’re findable here too. This does require a bit more than just sharing press releases. As on every social media channel, you need to actively post and share.

Pinterest

Number of users in the Netherlands over 14 years old: 3.5 million
Number of users worldwide: 335 million

Most people are on Pinterest to search for tips, ideas and inspiration in the form of images. This platform is THE place for all kinds of visual material. Looking for a new recipe? Try using Pinterest’s search function. You can basically search for anything you need inspiration for. When people click on an image on Pinterest, they then go to the website page with more information on it. This is where the strength of this channel lies. When people come to your website via Pinterest, you need to make sure they, for example, sign up for your newsletter.

Pinterest is especially popular among women. Do you feel your business can offer added value, in terms of content and appearance, to the images and texts on Pinterest? Then you should definitely start using this channel too. Think here of interiors and cooking. But remember: nothing is too crazy.

LinkedIn

Number of users worldwide: 675 million

LinkedIn is actually suitable for pretty much every business. Your business or brand doesn’t need to be in a special industry or provide a unique service. Now, LinkedIn isn’t a channel where you go and share your holiday snapshots. On LinkedIn, you share strong, catchy texts that show where your business’s strength lies. LinkedIn radiates professionalism, and you do need to take that into account. People who want to use the channel like a Facebook or Instagram aren’t really in their place here. Make sure you really have something to say that can inspire others in their work or life.

Does your target audience mainly consist of business stakeholders? Then LinkedIn is THE channel for you. Via LinkedIn you can share important updates about your business and stay in touch with people. So mainly remember that on LinkedIn, the business aspect is important.
