The new normal search behaviour.

Everyone has felt the changes brought on by corona. Not being able to shop physically, working from home and no outings. This has led to more time spent ‘online’. And this has been noticed clearly by, among others, webshop owners and (online) marketers. The only question now is: what has changed in consumers’ search behaviour?
Changes in search behaviour
A number of trends have emerged when looking at search behaviour during the ‘new normal’. These trends have come to light from Google’s data.
Trend 1: Research
Many people searched for ideas to change their home during the crisis. But the search terms “how to” and “Do It Yourself” were also frequently used. Many consumers gave their home a (small) update!
Trend 2: Shopping and pickup
Physical shops were closed, but there was a lot of shopping done online. The search term ‘online shopping’ was also used many more times. Additionally, there’s been a big global trend in picking up and having food delivered. Both trends are expected to keep growing, even after corona.
Trend 3: Local businesses
You’ve probably heard of the “support your local businesses” campaign. This is also reflected in search behaviour. Google’s ‘nearby’ option has namely been used far more often than before. And it could well be that, if you were happy with a shop and/or hospitality venue, you’ll go there more often after corona too.
Trend 4: Digitalisation
Corona meant schools, shops, cinemas etc. all had to close. This has resulted in the digitalisation of a great many sectors. The big question of digitalisation is: “What are consumers going to do now that restrictions are easing?”. The answer of course isn’t certain, but it’s expected that some consumers will keep doing a lot online.
Trend 5: The best product
Lastly, we can see that people have searched more for ‘the best product’ rather than ‘the cheapest product’. Consumers are therefore choosing good quality more quickly and the cheapest product less.
How do you respond to this?
The most important thing is: make sure you’re findable and visible online. Try to keep your strategy flexible so you can respond to changes. Want to respond to these trends right away? Then make sure of the following points:
- Make sure your assortment can be found on your website/webshop
