Jumping on trends on social media? Here’s how it’s done!

Is it 30 degrees outside? Jump on it! Is it International Giant Panda Day? Jump on it! Does our minister no longer have an active memory of a particular incident? Jump on it! Content marketers see opportunities and content everywhere. The most creative posts regularly come by on social media, and one is even better than the other. Today, on social media day, we’re showing you how you should jump on trends on social media.

Bol.com

A blog about social media trend-jumping isn’t complete without talking about Bol.com. Bol.com is the undisputed champion of social media in the Netherlands. The content department regularly sends viral posts out into the world and posts different content daily. It’s no coincidence that Bol.com won multiple awards this year at “the best social awards”. They were, among other things, named best brand on Facebook and Instagram and received an award for best copywriting.

By using cheesy humour and sharp trend-jumps, Bol.com knows how to conquer social media. Below we highlight a couple of nice posts.

Using current events

A good content marketer is sharp and fast. By that I mean they can create a fun trend-jump on current events. For example, a while ago the Netflix series ‘Squid Game’ was incredibly popular. It kept coming back everywhere, whether played as a physical game on the street in The Hague or with a fun trend-jump on social media. I personally thought the following trend-jump from Centraal Beheer was a nice one.

In addition, for days there was worldwide only one topic everyone was talking about. The huge container ship the ‘Evergreen’ got stuck in the Suez Canal. The Dutch company Boskalis eventually managed to free the ship. This was quite an achievement in itself, but Boskalis’s marketing team also delivered a gem.

Political blunders

The real gems came from an unexpected corner in recent years. With statements like “I have no active memory of that” and “position elsewhere”, politics scored highly. Of course, this was a goldmine for the content marketer. Companies like Hema and Young Capital cleverly played on this.

Summer temperatures

When all of the Netherlands is once again in meltdown because the thermometer climbs above 30 degrees again, the content top performers are still running at full speed. There’s regularly a trend-jump on the topic of the day, and therefore also on the heat. In the examples below, you can see how Heineken and Hornbach jump on trends well with a simple image.

Now it’s your turn again!

Are you, just like me, feeling totally inspired now? Start jumping on trends on social media yourself too, and who knows, you might see your own post back on our website next year. It’s also a fun way to stay active with your social media channels. When you always feel the pressure to send out serious, high-quality messages into the world, you don’t stay cheerful either. Let go of the professional for once and make a joke.
